September is Preparedness Month

September is Preparedness Month in Iowa. It’s a great time for households to come together and think about how they can get ready for emergencies, whether at home, school, or in the community. Iowa’s preparedness efforts align with National Preparedness Month, which is observed each September in the United States of America.

During Preparedness Month, Marshall County Emergency Management encourages Iowans to take four simple steps to ensure they are prepared.

Step One: Be aware of hazards in your area. Learn about the emergencies your community may face and how to respond. Sign up for local alerting and emergency notifications through Alert Iowa. Find out if your county participates in Alert Iowa at alert.iowa.gov.

Step Two: Make an emergency plan. You and your household may not be together when an emergency happens. Identify a meeting place and out-of-town contact. Knowing what to do, where to go, and how to stay in touch with each other is important.

Step Three: Build an emergency kit. Include essentials like water, non-perishable food, first-aid and medicines, supplies for children and pets, and hygiene items for your household for 3-7 days. Your kit should be in an easy-to-access location and include a grab-and-go option.

Step Four: Get involved. When you lend a hand, you build a stronger, more resilient community that can better withstand and recover from a disaster.

This course works best when delivered to ICS and EOC personnel from the same community. The course reviews ICS and EOC responsibilities and functions and depends heavily on exercises and group discussions to formulate the interface.

MGT 416: Introduction to Continuity of Government Planning for Rural Jurisdictions

MGT 416 is an 8-hour, DHS/FEMA-certified, tuition-free, planning and management-level course. This course is designed to help governmental officials and emergency responders in rural areas with the development of continuity plans that will help officials ensure essential governmental services remain functional across a spectrum of emergencies. This course will expose participants to the benefits of developing continuity of government plans for rural communities with special focus on succession planning, delegation of authority, redundant communications, and alternate facilities.

Topics include (but not limited to):

• Develop or strengthen current continuity of operations plans

• Address resource needs

• Succession planning

• Plan for alternate communications

• Designate alternate facilities

• Authority delegation

• Identify critical equipment needs

• Ensure personnel are properly trained

Continuity is an important element of preparedness and an integral part of each core capability across the five mission areas of protection, prevention, mitigation, response, and recovery.
